Google nets Spider.io to thwart fraudsters

Key Considerations for your Platform as a Service Strategy

Google is looking to boost the security and fraud prevention arms in its advertising business with the acquisition of London’s Spider.io.

The company announced on Friday that it had agreed to terms on a deal to integrate the fraud-detection specialist into its advertising services. The company will seek to help Google spot fraud on its advertising network.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Our immediate priority is to include their fraud detection technology in our video and display ads products, where they will complement our existing efforts,” Google vice president of display advertising Neal Mohan said in announcing the acquisition.

“Over the long term, our goal is to improve the metrics that advertisers and publishers use to determine the value of digital media,” Mohan said, “and give all parties a clearer, cleaner picture of what campaigns and media are truly delivering strong results.”

Billing itself as an “anti malware company for online advertisers,” Spider.io specialises in security and analysis tools which aim to help keep advertisers from falling victim to click fraud and other scams that use automated tools to inflate traffic and jack up advertising rates.

The company has played key roles in helping to spot and take down malware networks that were being used to power advertising fraud operations. ®
