Cisco ‘Everywhere’: Networking Giant To Buy OpenDNS For $635 Million
Cisco today announced its plans to purchase cloud-based security firm OpenDNS for $635 million. The networking giant said the acquisition fits with its new “Security Everywhere” strategy of integrating security into the network, data center, IoT, cloud, and endpoints.
OpenDNS, which provides threat intelligence via a software-as-a-service offering, is expected to enhance Cisco’s existing cloud security offerings.
“The acquisition will extend our ability to provide customers enhanced visibility and threat protection for unmonitored and potentially unsecure entry points into the network, and to quickly and efficiently deploy and integrate these capabilities as part of their defense architecture,” said Hilton Romanski, Cisco senior vice president and head of business development in a blog post today. “This acquisition builds on Cisco’s security strategy, adding broad visibility and predictive threat intelligence from OpenDNS’ cloud platform, accessed by more than 65 million users daily.”
Romanski said the goal is to “unite” the cloud solutions of both companies to address all stages of a cyberattack, from before to the aftermath. The deal is scheduled to be finalized in the first quarter of fiscal year 2016.
